Kieren was an Australian nurse who travelled internationally, and went to Lao; whilst working there he met a Laotian doctor, Toi, and they fell in love.
They wanted to come back to live together in Australia, so Kieren sought out our business, Stralia Migration; we recommended they apply for an offshore partner visa (subclass 309 visa), to migrate together back to Australia.
Obstacles
In Lao, a foreigner cannot legally live with his partner until they're atleast engaged.
Once engaged, to obtain a marriage certificate is an extensive process that may take some time; in the case of migration to Australia, evidence of this engagement / marriage certificate is necessary.
Solution
We encouraged Kieren and Toi to become officially engaged (the ceremony looked beautiful), at which point they were able to live together in Lao.
In addition to gathering as much evidence of this marriage ceremony as we could, we provided some supplementary documents to show the genuine nature of their relationship.

We applied for the 309 visa (offshore partner visa) in August 2022.
The approval was granted on the March 2023.
Since this approval, Kieren and Toi have come to Australia, live together in North Melbourne and by May 2025, Toi is now a Permanent Resident (having been granted the Partner visa, subclass 100).
